Scholarships

Westport Education Association Scholarship Program

Each year the WEA offers approximately twenty $300 undergraduate scholarships for the upcoming school year. Depending on the number of applicants, the grant may be reduced to less than $300.

Information will be sent to all members in April each school year. Applications are usually due mid May, with awards being mailed out in June.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicants must be the child of a WEA member in good standing.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in or accepted to a full time program at a college/university or an accredited post-secondary institution. 
  • Applicants must attend school in the Fall of the upcoming year as an undergraduate student..
  • Applicants must have a firm commitment to further education and demonstrate a sense of direction.
  • Applicants must have at least a 2.75 grade point average.
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need. If all other qualifications are equal, financial need will predominate.
  • Prior WEA Scholarship recipients are eligible to apply but previous awards will be taken into consideration and the amount awarded may be reduced.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:

  • Financial need
  • School and community involvement
  • Evidence of self-help
  • Scholastic performance
  • Satisfactory completion of application form

Students must submit the following with their applications:

  • A very brief essay (1 page or less) on career plans, qualifications, and need for this scholarship.
  • An unofficial high school/college transcript including the 2 most recent semesters’ grades.
  • Proof of acceptance to a full time program at a college/university or an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Any extenuating circumstances not previously mentioned within the essay or other parts of the application.
  • A copy of parents’ most recently filed Federal Tax Return (page 1) indicating Adjusted Gross Income.

All documents should be scanned (must be PDFs) and email to April Bassick at aprilbassick@westportea.org.  Please DO NOT send any photos of documents. 

Note: If you do not receive a confirmation within 24 hours after you send, please follow up with April.

A scholarship committee will review all COMPLETE applications. The winning recipients will be notified in early June. Scholarships will be awarded in mid June and will be mailed home.
